The novel in verse, Eb and Flow by Kelly J. Baptist is worthy of being read by 7th graders in APS. This text has a relatable theme, interesting perspectives, and great imagery. These elements are essential for students at the middle level to comprehend. Firstly, the theme for Eb and Flow is don’t jump to conclusions. On page 77, Eb revealed that she spilled the barbecue sauce on Flow’s shoes by accident. She stepped on his shoes by accident, and when Flow called her the B-word, she pretended to spill barbecue sauce onto his shoe. Only she didn’t know the pack was open in the corner, and the barbecue sauce came out. This shows that what Eb did was an accident. But Flow assumed that she must have done it on purpose and started swinging at her, which made everything way more serious than it needed to be. Another example is on page 36, where Eb basically tells her brother Ty’ree to jump Flow. She made things way more complicated when she told him to do that. She jumped to conclusions and assumed that Flow smacked her for no reason, which made her feel the need to get revenge on him. …show more content…

For example, on pages 51-52, Eb recounts one time when she and her siblings walked all the way to their mom's house just so they could get to see her. But their mom wasn’t excited to see them. She ended up driving them back. Eb constantly struggles with family issues, with her mom being a distant figure in her life, and with her Granny feeling like she’s about to crack down on them any second now. The only escape for her was her dad, who was living in Texas. This was a window into Eb’s family life for me. Another example was the window into the situation of the fight and suspension.
