In the story, The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken, the theme is you can always grow out of the person you can always grow out of the person you used to be and become stronger. This is shown in many ways throughout the story with the main character Ruby.
In the story, when Ruby was in camp for her powers, she erased the memory of her best friend at the times, Sam. When Ruby touches anyone she can either see into their mind or she erases it entirely. In the first piece of evidence, Ruby describes what happened when she touched Sam and what happened when she could tell she caused harm. “But the second my fingers touched her shoulder, the world dropped from under her. This moment makes her remember the harm she has done and how she made her own best friend forget everything about her. Her old self scares her and makes her terrifies of the powers she has been given. Next, there is a moment when Sam says her first words since losing her memory and doesn’t know who Ruby is. “‘Are you new here?’ she demanded, suddenly feeling defensive and startled. Her eyes flicked down from my face to my bony knees, then back up again”(Bracken 35). This shows that Ruby has realized she's done something very wrong and has messed up big time. Ruby erased her mind and has to cope with the fact that she did this to someone she cared a lot about and who was one of her only friends at the camp. Finally, Sam finally says something that really messes with Ruby and it is some of the last words that these characters ever say to each other due to the incident. “She sucked in a deep breath, as if coming up for after a long time beneath dark waters. ‘Do you have a name at least?’ ‘Ruby,’ I whispered. It was the last words I spoke for nearly a year”(Bracken 36). This is important because these
