The book, “The Liberation of Gabriel King,” by K.L. Going is about a boy, Gabe, who is on a journey with his best friend, trying to liberate each others’ fears. On this journey, Gabe is faced with something unknown to him, discrimination. Gabe begins to grasp that his friends and family, can help him liberate his newfound fears and his old fears. When Gabe learns of discrimination he begins to mature and become more liberated. Gabe is first introduced to discrimination when frida was beating up Duke, but as soon as duke’s father caught sight of him he yelled,”You got beat up by a nigger girl?’ By Mr. Evans saying that Frita’s eyes looked like there were gonna pop out of there socket, due to nobody every calling her such a name. This is an example of discrimination only because Frita was black. I do not believe that Mr. Evans would call here that name if she was white. “All this time I’d been trying not to be scared, and it turns out all I had to do was be brave.” Gabe finally knowns the key to finding true courage when he, his father, and mother were dancing around their trailer blasting the record player, “Gabe, put on some music…’Who’s afraid of a silly speech...Who’s afraid of being a fool... Who’s afraid of the Ku Klux Klan? Me and momma said,’Not us!’..Everything’s gonna be all right,’..And finally I knew he was right.Then he said something I won’t ever forget. ‘Ain’t nothing so scary when you’ve got people you love,’ Right then I knew I found my courage” I believe that Gabe finally found his courage when he finally knew that nothing is that scary when you're around the people you love. He knew that with the support of loved ones he could accomplish and get through any obstacles that came his
