Abolitionist Strategies David Walker and Phillis Wheatley are two exceptional humans. The ideologies expressed throughout their work had a unique perspective, due to their intimate insight of being apart of the slave system. Though they align on the right to freedom, they do not entirely collude together, on the same abolitionist tone. Wheatley wishes to degrade this institution, through wit and intellect.
“Fear keeps us focused on the past and worried about the future.” The main character of the short story “The Terror” by Junot Diaz would agree with this because he is stuck in a cycle of fear after getting beaten up. He got into a fight with a group of brothers and was paralyzed with fear for a long time after that. The author uses the character's actions and his feelings to show that the only way to conquer fear is to stand up to fear itself.
What is courage? The dictionary defines it as, “the ability to do something that frightens one”. But the belief that someone is doing something to frighten another seems inaccurate. We’ve all grown up knowing courage as an intangible fire that only comes from within and it helps guide you when you’re feeling doubtful or scared. This type of true courage is displayed by Piggy from the novel, Lord of the Flies, Martin Luther King Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail and Tim O'Brien in the short story, On the Rainy River.
It is the most prominent inert trait that humans possess. Allowing us to take on horrors beyond humanity and come out of it alive. It allows us to make the world's toughest decisions. Fiction such as ‘1917’ by Sam Mendez, and ‘The Two Generals’ by Scott Chandler, depict the subject of men with great courage and how that guides their choices. Let’s see some examples of how courage allows you to carry on

Courage is a word that used often or not, has it’s own meaning. Having courage to do the impossible is experienced in our everyday lives without even thinking, such as, taking out the trash, going to school, taking a step onto a unknown street, it happens to us all and can even have a dramatic impact on yourself, your future, and your life. In the book Night courage is experienced every single day of torture. Prisoners, such as Elie, face and fight for their own survival not knowing that their best weapon possessed in their hands was courage. Courage was a weapon, a very powerful weapon that could change your fate in an instant.
This courage is what Elie Wiesel's character Eliezer uses in the book Night to help cover and ignore his wounds quickly so that he is able to survive. His courage made it so he could survive these most horrible events even though his scars have never fully healed.
It is common to fear a challenge or obstacle that stands in one's way, Nelson Mandela's quote, "I learned that courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear" reminds us that true courage is not a lack of fear, but rather the ability to overcome it. It is not about avoiding fear, but about facing it head on and prevailing. The short story “The Terror” by Junot Diaz is a great example of the quote.
No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ’em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change” (101). Not giving in to emotion right away also shows courage. There’s courage in going about things the right way – rather than the easy way – and sticking with it; in avoiding being impulsive even when you know you aren’t likely to win the civilized way. There’s courage in standing up for what you believe in, and further, taking pride in it, holding your head high, and not reacting harshly to those who see things another
Many philosophers and psychologists claim that fear and courage go hand in hand. Ultimately before completing a courage act one must face their fears yet persevere and act. Still, there were gunshots and some dead” (Wiesel 96).
