The purpose of prenatal and infancy research is to examine the development growth stages and behaviors of infants from time of conception until post birth. Research methods for studying infants include naturalistic observational studies and laboratory studies (Gross, 2011).
In a naturalistic study, observations of infant behaviors and prenatal development is made by researchers in a natural environment or setting. The pros of conducting a naturalistic study is that there is no manipulation. Subjects are unaware of the conducted research, which allows natural and realistic behaviors to occur. The limitations of a naturalistic study is that it can be time consuming, results may differ from other subjects, and uncontrolled outside influences
