The Real Lincoln is a very informative book. It shows the complete and hidden side of Lincoln during the time of his presidential term. Thomas J. Dilorenzo did a very good job at expressing his ideas and opinions of Lincoln along with supporting them with legitimate facts. The author also reveals the myths of Lincoln and the true origins of the United States Civil War.
Thomas DiLorenzo is economics professor at Loyola University in Maryland. Some people saw Lincoln as a dictator for launching such a military invasion without congress’ permission. He suspended Habeas Corpus, imprisoned many northern citizens for opposing his political beliefs, and censored all telegraph communications. He also interfered with elections and confiscated firearms. As Lincoln managed the Civil War efforts his main strategy was to burn down southern towns and houses. Black ex-slave males were also given the right to vote in the south even though they could not vote in several northern states. Lincoln is known for “saving the union” when he destroyed it and made it where it was no longer a voluntary action and forced the south, at gunpoint, to stay in the Union. The Civil War was not started to end slavery but to save the union and for states to no longer have individual rights. After the Civil War was over, taxes were raised in the south but no public benefit was ever seen and therefore most of the money was stolen and pocketed by republican activists. Over all, this war was not needed to free slaves but to reduce the power of the states and make America a more centralized government. Using military force to keep a state from seceding was unthinkable and it quickly became the policy of the Lincoln administration to use deadly force against anyone, including civilians. Lincoln repeatedly replaced his top generals until he found the right one for the job. After loosing several major military defeats Lincoln’s strategy and started focusing on southern civilians.
