Scout looked around the room and instantly did not like what she saw. People were moving their bodies in weird ways that she didn't know was possible. The sounds around her encased her and startled her. She did not like this environment. Girls were dancing around in frilly dresses and boys were all dressed up in fancy attire. Scout did not understand why people were so formal for an event like this. She looked around with a look of disgust. She almost threw up looking at all of the girls dressed with bright sequins and pastel colors. School dances did not seem pleasing to Scout. She had just recently learned what a school dance was, but she did not like it at all. She scanned the crowd for her brother.

She made her way over to a row of benches and plopped herself down. She wedged her face between both her palms and rested her elbows on her knees. She hunched over with a sigh as a pout developed on her face. She did not want to be here anymore, but her brother was nowhere to be seen and he told her not to leave without him. Usually she would have left with or without him, but she didn't know her way back home, so she waited for her brother to show himself.

She noticed that he had dark hair. That was all that she could distinguish about him in her young adolescent mind. He seemed upset just like her, except more disappointed. Her eyebrows furrowed as she wondered why he was so upset. She thought of several different scenarios, but nothing seemed believable. She continued to stare at him until he turned and looked at her. They continued to look at each other for a while until he gave her a sideways smile and looked away. He looked back at the crowd as if she wasn't even there, but he had to had noticed her because he looked right at her for what felt like fifteen minutes and he even gave her a half smile. She decided to cough to get his attention. She didn't know if it would work but that was what she saw older people do to get someone's attention, so she tried it out. It worked.
