This audio recorded radio speech of Harry Truman explains his intentions and threats he will put upon Japan. This speech is an extremely critical primary source because it is said by the president of the the United States during the same period of time that the event was taken place, he explains the direct plan the American government will use in order to win the war and protect american lives. The purpose of Truman’s speech is to indicate that the Americans are not going to end this war without a victory, they are going to fight for their liberty and they will not stop until they succeed. To begin with, Stimson emphasizes his job in the American government, he talks about his contribution to the use and development of atomic energy, and describes the development and testing of atomic bombs. Then, Stimson touches on the decision to undergo the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Stimson shares his views on the political impact for the bombings and tells the reader his opinion on the event. The article ends with how the U.S was successful in it’s use of the atomic bomb to force Japan’s surrender in World War II. This article is relevant to my thesis, because it helps me learn about what made the the Japanese surrender, and how the violence from the Americans veered their decisions to compromise with them. It provides me valuable insight on the American government's thought process and plan to destroy Japan, as well as evidence on how massive the atomic bomb really was and how much it impacted the Japanese.
