Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is the story of a man named Jacob Jankowski and the life he had which was mostly centered on the circus. Jacob is a ninety-three-year-old man who resides is a nursing home which he believed was because his children were too busy to take care of him. Jacob was old and grouchy and got into an argument with another patient. The patient was having a conversation with some of the other patients and said that he used to carry water for the elephants at a circus in when he was younger. Jacob called the man a liar and the conflict escalated from there. Jacob was sent to his room where he sat and reminisced about his past life, which was full of excitement, unlike his current life. Everything was going great for him until he was in a class lecture and was presented with the news that both his parents had been killed. He went back home to bury his parents and while there, he found out his parents had put all of their money into his education. Jacob had no money, hope, or motivation and could not finish school because of his lack of focus. Wandering around hopelessly, Jacob spotted a train and became a stow-away in one of the carts. He befriended one of the passengers and later found out that he was on a traveling circus train. His new friend helped him find small work around the circus just to do his part and earn meals. Eventually, Jacob met with the owner of the Circus, Uncle Al, and the head animal trainer, August, in hope of a permanent spot on the train. Once they learned of his previous studies, they hired him immediately. Jacob got increasingly better with the circus animals and even broke in the new elephant, Rosie, who was thought to be impossible to train. After Rosie was trained, August accused his wife, Marlena, and Jacob of having an affair, which was true but August had little proof. This accusation caused a fight to break out between August and Jacob, resulting in both
