The article “Why aren’t woman advancing at work” by Jessica Nordell, discusses gender inequality and why women are lagging in the work place. This article discusses Schilt’s work and the interviews she has had with transgendered people about their experience in the workplace after transitioning. This article examines various discussions well known trans people have had in their field, as they switched genders. It examines the preconceived stereotypes people have of each gender and how they are exemplified when they switched genders. Transgendered are ideal because they can reveal bias and prejudice that other people can’t since it’s almost impossible to isolate gender as a variable in the scientific method.
This article talks about, The WTM trans, previously known as Barbara Barres and later Ben Barres on his experiences once he switched genders. Ben Barres describes having an almost immediate difference in how he was perceived when he switched genders. An example of this instance is when a scientist unware about ben being transgendered, describes Ben Barres as having given a great seminar, and how his work is much better than his sisters Barbara Barres. In her experiences after the switch of her gender, she was taken less seriously and identified as more aggressive. Whenever she questions a mathematical idea, people thought she questioned, because she didn’t understand the content of the questions. In men the qualities that are “take charge”, when genders were swapped were perceived as being “aggressive” in woman. She mentions how “men are seen to be competent until proven so, and woman incompetent until also proven so.” The subjects very clearly were able to understand the correlation of why men succeeded in the workplace more often than woman, due to gender stereotypes present in todays
