In lines 3-5 Michael Mack uses a claim. He states this claim from the freshmen point of view. This shows he has an understanding of Shakespeare himself and how the people who read it think. In lines 65-66 he claims Shakespeare is like a lens to the real world. Through this claim he uses logic and compares
In regard to his flaw argument, it say, “Shakespeare offers us a lens on the real world in which we live”(Mack,3).
The plays are full of expertise on a wide variety of subjects including contemporary and classical literature, multiple foreign languages, and a detailed knowledge of Italy. Italian language and culture, the law, medicine, military matters, sea navigation, painting, mathematics, astrology, horticulture, music, and a variety of aristocratic sports like bowls and falconry.”. Cutler points out that Shakespeare wouldn’t have had such a wide field of knowledge of different cultures if he had never traveled that far. He also points out that his plays are full of different cultures that he wouldn’t have had any information about it. Cutler's points in this section really shatter the idea of
In Michael Mack’s article “Why Read Shakespeare?”, he discusses the importance of reading literature, especially Shakespeare, explaining how it teaches people about themselves, and how the world functions. Throughout the article, he explains how reading literature can cause people to reflect upon themselves. Throughout the texts "The Poison Tree" and "Hamlet", society can view the different perspectives on the difficulties and how complex seeking revenge can turn out to be, and the consequences that can come with it. In "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare delivers the theme of revenge through the main character Hamlet. Hamlet is fixated on seeking revenge for his father's death.
(Lines 30-34) “This phenomenon of people having difficulty understanding Shakespeare is hardly new. It predates by centuries our truncated attention spans and our preference for the fast cuts of modern video. It is a problem that the editors of the First Folio addressed in 1623, just seven years after the death of Shakespeare.” Using this piece of evidence Mack proves that even people from Shakespeare’s time admitted it was difficult to grasp Shakespeare’s way of writing. They knew well that it took multiple reads to understand the meanings behind Shakespeare’s words in his plays.
To begin with, Mack uses many Rhetorical devices to his advantage. In line 25 Mack states “ You hear but you don’t hear. Why should it be any surprise, then that, the first time you read shakespeare you don’t get it?” This makes the reader
To strengthen his argument, Mack could’ve explained Shakespeare much better at points in his speech so his audience could understand his reasoning a lot better. Mack makes a reference to Macbeth, in which he says that “In the case of Macbeth, we have a supreme reflection of ambition… Either you don't understand the true nature of Macbeth’s ambition or you don't know yourself.” (Lines 85-91). Mack refers to Macbeth as it everyone in his audience has read it.
In his speech he is arguing for the merits of reading Shakespeare, one of the earliest and most influential writers in the English language. As a student, I must admit, reading Shakespeare was never an exciting event or something that I looked forward to. However, in Mack's speech, he makes quite a point for the potential benefits of Shakespeare's work on an
This commentary will be the focus point of using evidence in my lessons, encouraging students to make explicit connections to their claim. Students have also shown an ability to develop claims around character motivation, but have not had extensive practice identifying the way an author chooses to characterize central and secondary characters. This lesson segment plans to focus on developing the vocabulary to interpret how Shakespeare chooses to characterize Friar Lawrence and the Nurse or Mercutio, and support that interpretation with evidence and commentary from the
In lines 50-55 he uses one example saying”reading Shakespeare- that’s just not me: i’m just a normal guy,and the simple pleasures are good enough for me. besides , what would my bowling buddies say?”. This evidence shows mack using an example of a regular person trying to relate in some way with the audienice. In other evidence, in lines 55-59 it also two quick examples of a person trying to get there professinonal studies done as fast as possible, or the other example saying”i much prefer something more scientific-i believe in studying “real” things: fiction is fun to read on summer break, but…”.
Shakespeare helps you understand real life situation.mack composed an effective argument that should want to make them want to take the time to read and comprehend Shakespeare. Through his use of his claim and rhetorical device helps you understand the real world To began with his technique that mack uses to advance his argument is his use of claims. To help you understand the real world in lines 112 he says “ I can say that he can be particularly helpful in understanding the heart. Read Shakespeare and spare yourself a world of bad dates”.
Lines 92-100 Mack believes that if the college students understand Shakespeare then they’re able to understand their life and what they want their
Opponents may argue that Shakespeare’s language may be hard for students to understand and perform. On the other hand, once students understand the Shakespearean language it becomes simple for teenagers. For example, when the article, “Why Study Shakespeare?” talks about how people might not want kids to study Shakespeare because it’ll be hard for them to understand, Farrelly says that if students get taught perfectly about the Shakespearean language then, “Students gain strength, determination, and the capacity to deal with minor hardships (like forgetting your lines on stage) by studying, memorizing, and performing Shakespeare.” This quote says that students feel more comfortable about Shakespeare’s language once they learn it and it’ll be
We all think of William Shakespeare as a playwright and actor. It is certain that he was an actor, but the idea of him writing plays isn’t set in stone. As a matter of fact, there is more evidence to suggest that Christopher Marlowe, an English poet, used the name William Shakespeare as a pseudonym to publish his plays. Credit for the works of William Shakespeare was wrongly given to Shakespeare as oppose to Christopher Marlowe. Marlowe was born on February 26, 1564, to a shoemaker in Canterbury, England.
In our freshman year of high school ninth graders must learn the many things in each of their subjects. In english class students are required to learn William "Bard of Avon" Shakespeare’s works. With Shakespeare 's works of literature and drama being 400 years old it’s expected that many people don’t want Barb’s works to be taught in the curriculum in schools. Shakespeare 's works should not be taught to students in schools because it’s difficult for students to understand, his work is not culturally diverse, and is outdated for today’s students. First, it’s difficult for many students to understand Shakespeare’s dialogue.
