I quickly realized that many sociological studies are subjective, and different people will perceive a study in a different way. An example of this would be my reaction to the functionalist view on social stratification in Unit 7, which we discussed to be a view that supports the idea of social stratification. Initially, I felt this was wrong, because we should be striving for equality. After our discussions on the issue, I came to the realization that there are different ways to view this situation, as explained by the perspectives of functionalists, conflict theorists and interactionists.
Cady Stanton and Maya Angelou “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” (John C. Maxwell). Cady Stanton who wrote Declaration of Sentiments and Maya Angelou who wrote On the Pulse of the Morning are two different people; one is fighting for rights people need, while the other one is alive and wants people to enjoy life. They talk about separate ideas, and they also discuss what people need versus how they need to enjoy life. Angelou and Stanton are different in their beliefs; Stanton fought for women's rights, and Angelou wanted people to know how beautiful one’s life can be. Doctor Maya Angelou and Cady Stanton used freedom in different ways; Angelou wanted everybody to enjoy life and the freedom of life.
Finally, the three sociological perspectives can be seen. Functionalist can be observed in the way
Around the world, sociologists have researched on human behavior, observing people’s daily decisions and choices, which ultimately causes an effect to the rest of the society. The sociological perspective is how sociologists see the world, a perspective on human behavior and the connections between the behavior of the individual people and structures of society in which we live in. Although there is an overarching view in the sociological perspective, there still lies the different levels and interpretations of it. The three notable sociological perspectives are: symbolic interactionism, functionalism and conflict theory. While symbolism focuses on the face-to-face interactions, functionalism and conflict theory work more on a macro level,
In the conceptual portion, I will be focusing on the theories of motivation and the concept of power and influence, as well has traits of conflict theory and how the theory relates to and provides insight into the experiences of the main characters in the film.
During Maya’s childhood, she was segregated by white people to the point where she started to believe that white people were not real. She felt sufficient enough being loved by Bailey. When Maya’s father came and took her and Bailey back to their mother’s home in St. Louis, her life began to fall apart. She liked being held by the mother's boyfriend (Mr. Freeman) and she was too young and innocent to recognize the possible danger which ultimately resulted in the brutal rape at such a tender age. She blamed herself for allowing Mr. Freeman to hold her before he supposively raped her.
Angelou’s contribution to the Civil Rights Movement and her achievements as an activist were remarkable. While these achievements seem to be enough to last a lifetime, the Civil Rights Movement was only the beginning for Angelou. Angelou worked as an outspoken Civil Rights activist during the movement. But even after the Civil Rights Movement had ended, she continued to be a voice of humanity, speaking out against anything that harmed the human spirit. Angelou moved on to influence American society as a whole, from the 1970’s to the day she died, May 28, 2014.
Carmen Chan COM 216-1002 February 3rd 2016 COM 216 Assessments#1 1. Theory is the general statements or ideas that explain the relationship about how everything works, produces or happens. The four main goals for theories in communication contain description, explanation, prediction and reformation. Each of the goals engages with theory on different levels in order to justify the theory.
I first watched this movie my sophomore year of high school, and just like all of my classmates, I too was fascinated by the story the movie told. I watched the movie again my junior and senior year of high school, and now I think I know the story quite well. Two theories present in the movie are the structural functional theory and the symbolic interaction theory, both of which I will be discussing in my paper. Summary: The movie starts off as if it were a game show.
Looking at society as a whole with individual units that work together to make society function efficiently is the structural functionalism concept. Each unit has a part and is describe as institutions such as family, religion, education, politics, economy and inequality. Because structural functionalism looks at social structure and patterns of behavior it is able to create values for society. As well as, distinguish between visible and suppressed problems within the social structures that may need to be addressed. For instance, homelessness is indication of dysfunction in structural functionalism system.
Functionalism Functionalism emphasizes how social structures maintain or undermine social stability in macrostructures (Brym,
Functionalism and The Bee Movie Amari Wilburn-Jones Introduction to Sociology February 16,2018 In the field of Sociology sociologist often view society from three major theoretical perspectives: symbolic interactionism, functional analysis, and conflict theory. Each theories/perspective is a way to view how parts of the world fit together and work. In this paper I will be analyzing The Bee Movie from the functional analysis perspective to see how the actions of people within a society can help or hinder the society as a whole.
In this paper I am going to present a debate between two approaches developed in the course of the 90s: structural-functionalism and practice theory. What I am trying to grasp is whether these two approaches are similar and/or different, but especially understanding how they both address the study of socio-cultural systems as a whole on one hand, and the study of individual subjectivities on the other. From the names and brief descriptions of these two approaches one is drove to think that structural-functionalism, which focuses on the study of the structures in society understood as the continuing arrangements of persons in relationships defined or controlled by institutions (Radcliffe-Brown 2013:182), is concerned most on studying socio-cultural system as a whole, while practice theory, which focuses on people’s capacity to make and transform the world in which they live, is more about the study of individual subjectivities. But the relation of these two approaches is actually more complicated than that.
From the point of view of Talcott Parsons, structural-functionalism describe a particular stage in the methodological development of social science, rather than specific school of thought. Strengthens and Weaknesses of Structural Functional Theory The strength of this theory is it can be used widely in the society. Structural functional theory can explain most of the social change as a result of changes such as population increasing and increased
Symbolic Interactionism Theory: The theory analysizes society by the descriptive meanings that people have given to objects, events and behaviors. The behavioral pattern of the people will be based on these descriptive meanings because people behave according to their descriptive believes rather than objective truth. (Blumer, 1969)
