Journal Entry - MAY 27, 1843. One calm morning in Massachusetts I noticed while I was approaching the hospital hut I worked at, I saw people running around in some sort of panic, some people seemed to have severe burns and bruises. Moments after the people scattered I noticed smoke and flames spitting out of the hospital, then one of my co-workers approached me, they shouted “ADA, it happened so fast no one knew what happened!” I gasped as I noticed that everything around the hospital was destroyed. Minutes later I ran home and I stutteringly explained to Dan, my husband, that the hospital was burned down.
"Expecting and accepting are two sides of life. Where expecting ends in tears, accepting makes you cheer. Accept life the way it comes. " The quote shows that when you expect something, you may be disappointed by the outcome. But when you accept someone for who they are or for what something is, you can understand and move on.
Fahrenheit 451 Journal Entry #2 If I were Guy at this point I would be extremely paranoid because having a book is one of the greatest crimes in their society and you can be punished by death. He also has been seen carrying a book so I would be trying to hide the books and instead of quitting work I would have kept going to work because it makes him look very suspicious by suddenly quitting your job after hinting that you have a book. Another thing I would have done is not tell Mildred that you have books because she isn’t very trustworthy and therefore she would tell the fire department. I really like Beatty as a character because he is contradictory to himself, he is the leader on the war against books yet he is the only person that has
“As long as you live, there's always something waiting; and even if it's bad, and you know it's bad, what can you do? You can't stop living.” (Capote 88). This quote suggests that no matter what happens in life, there is always something else waiting, whether it be good or bad. Even if someone knows that what is waiting for them is bad, they cannot stop living and must face whatever comes next.
Failure is vital to the growth of not only heroes, but ordinary people as well, as it teaches them how to move past their guilt and negativity in order to persevere. Through the article Nine Ways to Fail Better, the author shows that it’s not easy to deal with failure, but it is extremely important to move on. The author states, “Blaming yourself for the bad things that happen to you--are probably the biggest reason people metabolize failure badly.” In expressing that one should put the blame on themselves, “for the bad things that happen to [them]” stresses the idea that failure is often inevitable, and there is not much that can change the outcome of the situation. Additionally, there is no sense in feeling shameful about failure.
Accepting adversity, helps you overcome it. “One who has never tasted what is bitter does not know what is sweet”. We cannot appreciate joy in our lives without a measure of sadness. Adversity puts people in undesirable
Jacob Kasten AP Lang Daniels Processed Argumentative Paper A product of our daily lives, adversity’s effects are immeasurable. It is the effects of this perpetual struggle with adversity on which Horace asserts his philosophical interpretation. Horace affirms, within his quotation detailing adversity, that “adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” Horace claims that adversity elicits talent, an accurate, yet incomplete assertion that adversity catalyzes the complex process of learning, resulting in developed skills and knowledge. Horace’s claim, however, is incomplete because he describes “talents” as the only effect of adversity, when in reality the effects of adversity are
“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant” (Horace). The idea that hard times elicit the development of certain aspects of a character, whether good or bad, is prevalent in literature, particularly The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Horace’s assertion is true in regard to the two texts in that they both contain characters who develop maturity and mercy, a new self-awareness, and cunning duplicity. The notion that adversity develops talents is shown in the characters of The Crucible and The Scarlet Letter who matured and developed an ability to forgive over the course of the plot.
1. “… and then suffered a mild nervous collapse. He was treated in a veteran’s hospital near Lake Placid, and was given shock treatments and released.” (Vonnegut,24) This quote has to do with Billy’s mental health because it states he had a breakdown and spent time in a hospital for treatment.
Literary Analysis Suspense. It's what makes us sit on the edge of our seats at movies, or has us biting our nails as we read. It’s the backbone behind any classic horror film where the babysitter keeps getting unknown phone calls about checking the children and she asks the police to trace the call only to get a call back saying it's coming from upstairs.
In times of turmoil, the human spirit is tested in profound ways. The conflicts of life give way to experiences that reveal reality and the insignificance of man. When dictated by nature and stranded in isolation, identity and self-preservation begins to blur. Opportunities become feeble and sacrifices get made. There is a point, however, where the surrenders no longer fix, but destroy.
“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.” -William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar I can personally relate to this quote because I do believe whenever something unplanned or unpleasant happens many people within society like to blame others, the weather, their luck whatever a person wants to call it. But the fault is in ourselves, only you as a person can make a change and take charge of the things you most desire in life. For example myself, I have been known to take the easy way outs in my past, but my grade twelve years has been an enormous change for me and how I want my life to go for myself in the future and where I want to be in ten years. Instead of being apathetic about my personal health, education, mental health, ect., similar to what I have been in the past.
Double Entry Journal 1.” The tipping point is that magic momnt when an idea, trend, or social behavior croses a threshold tips and spreads like wildfire.” I found this quote interesting because I feel like it’s trying to tell us that life is filled with many great ideas. 2.
“Never say goodbye because saying goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting.” - Peter Pan “Goodbye may seem forever. Farewell is like the end but in my heart 's a memory and there you 'll always be.” - “The Fox and the Hound” - Richard Rich and Jeffrey C. Patch If we live enough and keep a sad way of seeing life we could say life is tragically short. But most forget to remember with death comes life, with life comes death.
1. ‘I’ll wrack thee with old cramps, / Fill all thy bones with aches, make thee roar, / That beasts shall tremble at thy din.’ (1.2.372-74) Interrogate the representation of violence in The Tempest.
