The 56th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT), widely considered at one point in time as one of the elite ABCTs in the maneuver brigades in Forces Command, however it later encountered a variety of leadership problems before, during, and after its deployments. It is not surprising that my fellow leaders in the organization, COL Timmons and CSM Rose would face challenges, problems, or issues. The main concern in this case study points out how the leaders dealt or faced the challenges, which makes all the difference in the world when leading an organization. We will foster an environment where morale across the brigade is high. Together we’ll establish the trend with the brigade attracting the best of the officer and non-commissioned officer corps by shaping, educating, mentoring and promoting leaders. We will inspire a mindset where leaders want to lead, Soldiers want to Soldier, and a strong work ethic will always be present. Next I would demonstrate commitment focused influence to the brigade and move beyond compliance-prompted behavioral changes; focusing on influencing follower attitudes, beliefs, and values in order to gain commitment. Applying the right mixture of application of power and influence in the brigade will be one of my most important changes. I will rebuild trust in the unit, trust can characterizes positive relationships, and by empowering subordinates which is an important component of execution. Army leaders build trust by being honest and dependable, Soldiers will appreciate and support leaders who demonstrated these characteristics. Without trust, there will be no relationship, no commitment, and no effective communication among the brigade. I will mitigate resistance by anticipating what others value, their reactions to influence, their shared understanding of common goals, and their commitment to the general organization or the purpose of the mission and their trust in the organization and me as their leader.
