One hotly debated political question is the status of women in America, specifically when it comes to equal pay. The post-inauguration Women’s March in DC, for example, was filled with posters demanding equal pay for women; with that being said, Audi’s ad for the Super Bowl is one of the best yet for this year. The ad features a young girl competing against boys in a soapbox derby car race while her father’s voice asks questions about the world his daughter is growing up in. “What do I tell my daughter? Do I tell her that her grandpa is worth more than her grandma? That her dad is worth more than her mom? Do I tell her that despite her education, her drive, her skills, her intelligence, she will automatically be valued as less than every man she ever meets”? Though their intentions are admirable, Audi’s execution Sunday night was mixed as best, to improve this ad Audi should have provided clarity on the message being communicated. In an attempt to communicate support for women, the ad asks viewers painful questions that one would rather not emotionally associate with. Certainly, the intent of this ad is to communicate, that Audi does not believe any of these things. However, the explicit negative statements are so strong that the implied positive ones don’t stand a chance. For many women, these words of support from Audi represent just one more unwelcome reminder of the negative perceptions women are up against, but also provide hope that major corporations are starting to advocate for the inclusiveness of women in our
