Supermassive Black Holes (Not Explained by Muse)
Space is a mystery and we will never know all the answers to the universe and what's inside of it. However, we've learned a lot about our surroundings in the past few hundred years and we continue to advance further into the depths of the universe. We saw stars in the night sky and we researched, we saw distant planets and we travelled there, we saw distant galaxies and we researched some more. One thing we came across were the middles of great galaxies; an object that was unlike its surroundings and black holes were soon discovered. We know some information about black holes, but then we found supermassive black holes, which still remain a big mystery. What are they exactly and how did they form?7
Supermassive black holes sound like they would just be giant black holes; however, that's not exactly the case. …show more content…

As an object collapses, its density and the strength of its surface gravity increase; this means that if an object collapses to zero radius, its density and gravity become infinity, which is known as a singularity (Backman, Seeds 252). The phrase "black hole" actually refers to the volume of space around the singularity (Backman, Seeds 252). Both types of black holes have an event horizon, which is the boundary between the isolated volume of space-time and the rest of the universe (Backman, Seeds 253). Also, the gravity of a black hole only becomes extreme when an object is close to it (Backman, Seeds 253). Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity states that closer to the event horizon, the slower time goes by and stops at the event horizon (notes). An observer falling freely into a big enough black hole can’t detect the effects of gravity and time goes on as usual (notes) A light signal sent by someone falling into a black hole will look redder and redder, from far away, until it hits event horizon and vanishes
