The iHole In this short story by Julian Gough we meet Thierry, who we learn just moved back in with his mom. She was schizophrenic, or so said the rumors that were going around the room while people waited on Thierry to present his new product. These rumors didn’t have a lot of energy, and soon died out. We learn that Thierry had no enemies, no friends, and no life that anyone knew of. One could say that he was a loner. However, Thierry had created something, he had created a black-hole which was able to eat anything that was thrown into it. His peers didn’t know what it was, but they all agreed that it was beautiful. As his peers started to feed the hole, they soon were impressed. This is a fictional short story about the design of an imaginary product, and it is set inside a fictional version of Apple in the future. The author did a phenomenal job writing this story. He is given readers a good look into Thierry, the main characters situations and thoughts. Thierry doesn’t seem to be the most social person, and we learn early on in the story that he doesn’t have friends nor enemies. To me it seems like Thierry is the one who is schizophrenic, and not his mother. By mentioning it in the early in the story that the mother was schizophrenic, I kept looking for signs that Thierry might be the one who had mental issues. Thierry wants to belong in a real world, but it seems like he is living in his own. I believe that he is imagining that the iHole is real, he personally never throws anything in it himself, but others do. My take is that Thierry is in charge of all the other personalities we hear about throwing things into the iHole. I believe that for him this black-holes gets rid of things he doesn’t want, but he doesn’t believe that he is responsible for the things he throws away into the black-hole. This could be bad things he has done, or just thoughts he wanted to part with. I believe that while Thierry thinks he lives in the real world, he actually is in a mental institution.
