Television Performance :Supernatural
The performance that I selected is the 2005 television show, Supernatural. Supernatural was created by Eric Kripke and directed by Philip Sgriccia, John Badham and John Showwalter. The show is about two brothers, Sam Winchester played by Jared Padalecki and Dean Winchester played by Jensen Ackles, they hunt demons, ghost, vampires and all other supernatural creatures. The tv show can be streamed through Netflix or watched on the CW network on cable. “It has a rating of 8.5 stars and has been nominated for three prime time Emmys” (IMDb). Although the stories may differ from the original legend, the storytelling itself “is always the art of repeating stories” (McKean) but modified to fit in with the generation. There are various supernatural creatures in the show but the more prevalent ones in season 1 were, the ghost, demons and vampires. Legends regarding ghost and demons are harder to pinpoint because there are many of them all differing from each other. There are many different legends to the myth of the vampire. While some believe that it was a “sorcery from Ancient times that summoned a demon from another time” (Live Science) others believed that it began with a Romanian prince named Vlad Tepes. He regarded aspect of the well-known tale This series contains historical content regarding the colt gun. Samuel Colt “received a U.S. patent for a revolver mechanism that enabled a gun to be fired multiple times without reloading” (History.com). In the show Samuel colt constructs a gun that can kill demons and anything supernatural. The story in the show is that the gun only contains three bullets that work with it but in real life the gun was able to be used many times in war and did not have limited bullets. In the beginning of the season, Sam does all research on books but as the series progresses he starts to do his research on a computer. Another influence would be film because they use aliases that “are usually drawn from their favorite movie and rock stars – as agents Ford and Hamill (referring to Star Wars leading figures) or fathers Simmons and Frehley (referring to the members of famous rock band Kiss).” (Gonçalves). Dean’s style in music is important because it tells the audience about his behavior. He always listens to rock bands and sings along because they remind him of his father. He does not let other people use his radio and if they do he gets irritated. Through their adventures as “heroes” they remind the audience that they were deprived of living that all American lifestyle with a white picket
