I am applying for a Mental Health Nursing Mater’s degree because I want to help people who suffer from mental illness. With the skills I have acquired whilst working as a support worker and whilst undergoing a pyschaitric clinical course and practical as a nursing student, I believe I will achieve my goal of being a mental health Nurse practitioner. I gained some insight into a mental health career whilst undergoing my clinical rotations in a big psychiatric hospital back in my home country of Nigeria. The role includes writing care plans, interacting with the patients as well as carrying out ward rounds with a group of healthcare professionals. I would like to expand my knowledge further at a degree level and possibly higher.
By the end of the semester, I will be able to do a complete an initial psychiatric evaluation by the end of my practicum with minimal a help from my preceptor. b- By the end of the semester, I will be able to integrate, the knowledge learned, theories, research, evidence based practice and experience from the clinical setting into advanced psychiatric mental health practice. c- By the second week in clinical I will be able to utilize my knowledge of medications, therapy, labs, and interventions in my clinical practice.
I have always had a strong interest and desire to work in the health care field. My professional goal to become a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP), along with the desire to acquire evidence-based knowledge, has been especially challenging as I searched for the right college for my advanced degree. The variety of colleges offering this course of study made it hard to decide on the school I wanted to attend. As I narrowed my search, my goal focused on the school that best met my nursing and personal goals, and desires to achieve a higher education as a PMHNP.

Clinical mental health counselors understand that primary care physicians work and collaborate in the interest of patient care (Hooper, 2014). In primary care settings physicians have a significant role in mental health treatment and services (Hooper, 2014). Primary care physicians commonly prescribe medications and brief counseling for the treatmetn
I believe that this Master’s program will hone my skills of communication and interpersonal connections whilst allowing me to harness my compassion to all, openness to change, and cooperativeness with others. As someone who didn’t originally think that the mental health field was my calling, 2nd: Since graduating with my undergraduate degree, I have been working on an ambulance as an EMT. This position has shown me the significance of the mental health field in our community, especially in communities where there are barriers limiting access to mental health resources. I have especially seen a need for mental health resources for adolescent individuals who believe that they are individually struggling with mental health
As a nurse I will develop the leadership skills and competence to uphold the commitment I made to make a differences in the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. In my career as a Nurse Practitioner I will do all I can to assist individuals and their families in recognizing, without stigma, the value of psychiatric assistance during times of stress and
Nutritional supplements and aromatherapy holistic approaches for anxiety and depression appealed to me as I have recently been diagnosed with anxiety and have always wanted to try something different than just medicine that the doctor prescribes to me. After taking this course I see that a biopsychosocial perspective is more appealing to me because it takes into account my physical condition, thoughts, beliefs and social expectations, which are factors I believe contributes to my anxiety. For years, many of the doctors I had visited relied on a biomedical model which treated ill health as a physical problem that needs to be cured mostly with medicine. I would tell them my symptoms and they would just hand me a piece of paper with medicine that I should take to fill at the pharmacy. The problem with this model is that it relied heavily on a passive patient role
The hardest question is if mentally ill patients should be able to die on their own terms with or without a doctor's help (Minton-Beddoes). It is the hardest because the person's state of mind can change. Mentally ill patients should have the ability to die on their own terms too. Mentally ill patients are in just as much pain as physically ill patients, they should be allowed to do the same (Minton-Beddoes). Yes, the mentally ill patients state of mind changes, but that does not change the fact that they were in pain at one point in time, and probably still are (Minton-Beddoes).
By taking this course I will be able to receive hands on experience in one the areas of psychology I am interested in, and it will also help me narrow down my options. This summer practicum will allow me to incorporate all the skills I have learned within these last few years into my area of study. I will be receiving hands on experience in the
The Mental Health Act 2007 allows people with a mental disorder to be admitted to hospital, detained and treated without their consent – either for their own health and safety, or for the protection of other people (Mentalhealthcare.org.uk, 2015). Under this legislation a person can be admitted and given treatment against their wishes. Detainees are always told their rights so that they do not feel as though they are being punished; they also have the right to appeal. To be able to detain a person, they must be struggling to care for themselves and a risk to both themselves and others. Additionally, it must be the last resort because all other forms of treatment have been tried to no avail.
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
I have enjoyed taking this course overall as I have met my professor, visited campus, and may take more courses at Millersville since I have learned what taking a college course is like. Even though I learned about Psychology throughout this course, I also learned about myself as a student. I learn more effectively in a classroom rather than online, I needed better time management, and to reach out and ask for help. At the beginning of this course I thought I could just use the lecture notes online and learn from those.
