How can you more effectively support literacy in your content area? When defining curriculum, the first thing coming to mind is always content or standards written for a particular course. Content area serve a purpose and need efficient delivery through a programmed instructional and learning activities. Providing engaging instruction involves developing and implementing a curriculum aligned with standards and assessing students’ knowledge to make instructional decisions. “Vocabulary is at the core of Literacy, content area standards also emphasize the importance of words’’ (Fisher & Frey, 2014). Being science teacher I would like to share with teachers that scientific language is based on the International code of nomenclature and standards. Often, students struggle to read, write and remember the spellings of scientific terms. To overcome these issue, various instructional strategies are used on a regular basis to practice medical and scientific terms. Text books have vocabulary sections for each topic, after completing topic students practice vocabulary as homework. I collaborate with English teachers to support writing prompt on topics (example stem cells, environmental issues and energy crisis) and math teachers for scientific measurement system, reading graph for data and scientific notation. Cross content collaboration help student to use vocabulary appropriately. I use online games like purpose game, quizzes, cell alive and higher ed. Websites. These websites are very good for labeling parts. Visual are very good tools for learning. Ed.puzzle and higher Ed has some excellent animation on scientific processes. Filling space and matching columns is very much liked by my student. I
