Personal Statement: Public School Science Educator

Throughout the 23 years that I have been a public school science educator, I have worn many teacher leadership hats. In my position as Biology Teacher at Crescent City High School, I am currently appointed as the Science Department Chairperson and have been a resource provider as well as a curriculum and instructional specialist to my colleagues. I have served as a mentor for developing teachers, and am a member of our school’s Leadership Team.
As the Science Department Chairperson, I represent my department to the administration, serving as the spokesperson for the department and conveying information to them from the administration. I lead my department in setting both short and long-term goals, and in using assessment results to promote professional and student growth. In my role as a curriculum specialist, I help my colleagues to understand content standards and item specifications in planning instruction and assessment, helping to ensure consistent curriculum implementation throughout the school. In addition, I help my colleagues by sharing instructional resources including lesson plans, assessment tools, websites, and professional reading resources. One such initiative is maintaining and implementing our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program by participating in and leading, Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) under the direction of our AVID Coach. I also represent the Tenth Grade Teaching Team at leadership meetings and facilitate grade level PLC’s to help ensure both school and district goals are being met. In addition, I am Crescent City High School's Sophomore Class Advisor. It is my responsibility to organize students during school spirit weeks, to coordinate fundraising projects, and to be a champion for the tenth-grade student
