Abortion What is abortion? Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy by removing an embryo or fetus before it can survive outside the uterus. Abortion is an ethical dilemma that has been debated on for decades. The argument is about if abortion should be illegal. Those who support abortion, or pro-choice, give the reasons that a mother should be able to decide what happens to her body. Those who argue against abortion, or pro-life, use reasons such as morality and the safety of the mother, even though abortions are proven to be very low-risk and effective. Currently, some form of abortion is legal in all fifty states, with each state having at least one abortion clinic(An Overview of Abortion Laws). There are a few different kinds of surgical abortions. The most common is suction abortion. Suction abortion uses very gentle suction in order to clean out the uterus. Suction abortion is normally used until about fourteen to sixteen weeks after the mother’s last menstruation cycle. Surgical abortion is extremely effective. The abortion is successful more than ninety-nine out of one hundred times(In-Clinic Abortion Procedure). A woman can receive a surgical abortion six to fourteen weeks since the first day of her last menstruation cycle(Medical Versus Surgical Abortion). Some of the many positives for having a surgical abortion compared to a medical abortion is the support you receive at a clinic or health center. The people that work there are professionals that know what the mother is going through and they do everything they can to help her get through it comfortably. Another positive is that it is much faster and has a lot less blood than a medical abortion. A medical abortion may take up to twenty-four hours to complete and has heavy bleeding, whereas a surgical abortion takes about five to ten minutes and has light bleeding(In-Clinic Abortion …show more content…

Some argue that a fetus can feel pain twenty weeks after fertilization, but the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently stated that they believe a fetus cannot feel pain until the third trimester. Most abortions are performed before the twenty week timeline, meaning most abortions are not causing the fetus any pain.
