The common theme of courage is shown throughout the passage, “ Susan B. Anthony Dares to Vote” and the memoir,” I Escaped a Violent Gang.” This theme is evident throughout both passages because they both had to step up and make their voices heard. In the passage,”Susan B. Anthony Dares to Vote”, Susan B. Anthony has to stand up and say what she feels is right even if she goes to jail. But in the memoir,” I Escaped a Violent Gang” Ana has to stand up and say who was guilty, even if it means risking her life. They both have a common theme of courage, but their character’s actions are different. For example, Ana isn’t courageous at first, while Susan says it right away. Anthony Dares to Vote” Susan shows courage throughout the passage. In the beginning of the text it says,”In November 1872, she and 15 other women in Rochester, New York, had demanded to be registered and had voted in the national election” This shows courage because Susan and those 15 other women voted in the election when it was illegal and there would’ve been serious consequences. This action was dangerous and they knew it. Back then women were not allowed to vote and if they did it wouldn’t count so there really was no point. Because they did stand up, they have to go to court where they would get their punishment. In the middle of the text it says,”May it please your honor, Anthony replied. I shall never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty. And I shall earnestly and persistently continue to urge all women... that resistance to tyranny is obedience to God." This shows courage because she said that she wouldn’t pay a dollar to him because she feels she shouldn’t have to. She would’ve gone to jail until she paid the fine, but she would be there for awhile (or for life) because she said she will never pay it. At the end of the text, it says,”She often was heckled, or worse. Gangs of ruffians sometimes broke into her lectures and threw rotten eggs at her. She was accused of undermining the home, the family, and the purity of American womanhood.” This shows courage because when she gave lectures and stood up for what she felt, knowing people would take this action. She knew that a majority of people (men) would disagree with her statement and would treat her poorly because of her beliefs/they disagree.
