Movie Summary After 18-year-old Susanna Kaysen has a nervous breakdown and overdoses, she is checked into a psychiatric hospital. On the ward, she befriends the patients. She is drawn to the rebellious and charismatic Lisa, a diagnosed sociopath. As time goes by, Susanna befriends the patients. One night, Lisa convinces Susanna to escape with her. They seek shelter from Daisy, who has been released prematurely and is living in her own house. Lisa taunts the unstable friend who was sexually abused. Susanna finds Daisy committed suicide the next morning. Susanna is appalled when Lisa searches Daisy's body for cash. Realizing she does not want to become Lisa, she phones for an ambulance and returns to the hospital. After the incident, Susanna cooperates with her therapy and has great progress in her recovery. Before Susanna is released, Lisa returned to Claymoore. She steals Susanna's diary and reads it for the amusement of the patients, turning them against Susanna. It leads to a confrontation where Lisa breaks down and tries to commit suicide, but the patients talk her out of it. This time, Susanna and Lisa’s friendship especially spoke to me. They show me what a harmful relationship looks like. When one is personally in that relationship, it is easy to blind oneself to the truth. I believe that is what happened to Susanna. They had a great beginning but as time goes by, Lisa’s personality was holding Susanna back from becoming better. I started to reflect on my relationships with family, friends and new people I met from college and work. I looked at how I interacted with them and if I showed any signs of being too possessive, self-centered, or inconsiderate.
