MAHANAGAR TELEPHONE NIGAM LIMITED (MTNL)
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, MTNL, is a state owned provider of telecommunication services which operates in the metropolitan cities of Delhi and Mumbai. The Government of India holds a 100% stake in the company. In 2012, the company had a subscriber base of 5-6 million, of which 4.1 million were fixed line telephone users and the rest in the mobile services segment.
BHARTI AIRTEL
More commonly known as Airtel and founded by Sunil Bharti Mittal as a part of Bharti enterprises, this company is one of the foremost privately held telecommunications service provider in the country. The company has a 19.8% share in the GSM space within the wireless segment of the market as of 2012. Airtel increased its sales by 31% and profits by 1%, in a period of five years between 2007 and 2012. Both companies operate in the telecommunications service market in the country. They offer similar services in the wireless as well as landline segments of the market. However, MTNL is a public sector company owned by the Government of India and Bharti Airtel is a privately owned firm. There have been frequent reports about the loss-making nature of MTNL owing to a falling rate of active subscribers. According to a report by The Financial Times, out of the 5 million+ subscribers of MTNL, only 39.53% were active. This is in contrast with the performance of Airtel, which has shown an impressive rate of growing active subscribers over the last five years.
