When thinking about a grocery store, the typical image pictured is not only large, but also packed to the brim with products. While having a menagerie of choices has its upsides, it also means more time spent looking for the right one. One way Trader Joe’s differs from larger chain grocery stores is the size of the store, and the number of products sold. The average square footage of Safeway and Fred Meyer’s, respectively, are 47,600 and a whopping 165,000 (Investor.safeway.com, 2017) (Vault, 2017). As mentioned on the company’s “about us” page, they take every opportunity they can to cut costs for their customers. Trader Joe’s deems many of the familiar grocery store staples like club cards, and constantly revolving sales unnecessary, and therefore doesn’t participate in them. What they offer is consistently low prices, without the extra bells and whistles that tack on extra costs (TraderJoes.com., 2017). Another exclusive in Trader Joe’s wheelhouse is the promise of a fresh product. Much like the topic of the names behind the food sold at Trader Joe’s, the stores distribution centers are incredibly secretive. The location of the distribution centers aren’t confirmed, but based on store location, people have been able to make an “educated guess”. Seeing as Trader Joe’s stores get daily deliveries from their distribution center, it would be most reasonable to pick store location on the location of the distribution centers (Kowitt, 2010).
