Carlos Lascano highlights the power of imagination as a means of escape from reality. Lascano incorporates his own ideals on imagination and using it as an escape from reality by using symbols such as colour as a way to demonstrate emotions and hope, objects to represent ideas and meaning, along with characters to symbolise society, the girl’s own fear, and in addition, the girl's embodiment of her ambitions and dreams. By using these different symbols to represent ideas, emotions, society, one's own fear and embodiment of one’s own perception of self , Lascano is able to portray his own emotions and views on the idea of imagination and reality within the film “A Shadow of Blue.” Lascano uses the colour blue in order to represent the characters’ …show more content…

There are multitudes of this orange butterfly that fly around and slightly interact with the girl. These butterflies entertain and bring superficial joy to the girl but they do not stick around for long, nor do they interact with the girl much to begin with. This shows that reality isn't as she wishes it was and helps represent how disconnected with reality she truly is. On the contrary, the girl is ostensibly obsessed with the blue butterfly, as that is what her shadow chases throughout the film. This blue butterfly is her hope, imagination and dreams. We can further interpret this, as she is the one that creates the butterfly and brings it to life through the portrayal of the origami butterfly she creates at the beginning of the film. Having the girl construct the blue butterfly at the beginning represents her ambitions and wishes for life. Furthermore, when it flies away, it helps to symbolise that her wishes for life are taken away from her by her inability to walk. The girl creating the butterfly seems to represent the formation of her passions and desires. By using the butterflies but representing them in different ways, Lascano is able to further incorporate hidden meaning into his work to portray his concept of the idea of imagination and reality in a more tangible
