In the movie "Big Fish", one of the symbolism is tossing the shoes of all the people onto the wire. People generally wear 'shoes' when they have to go out somewhere, shoes are a symbol of freedom and shows the ability to leave any place any time. The people of town 'Spectre' never wear shoes and they never leave their town. Every time a new person comes in the town, his shoes are tossed onto the wire.
