In a book “Among the Hidden” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, symbolism is used to create a powerful feeling with a place or thing. For example, Luke (the main protagonist) was "... always safe and protected by the house and the barn and the woods. Until they took the woods away." (pg. 11) The woods were Luke’s playground where he didn’t have to worry about being seen, his only safeguard and protection from the Population Police.
Inside out and back again by Thanhha Lai is a work of historical fiction. First, Ha and her family were forced to flee their home country of Vietnam due to war. They have to face this hardship and without the support of their father, who was kidnapped by the Communists and disappeared. Then, they travel on a boat in unsanitary and awful conditions to refugee camp in Guam. Next, they are sponsored by a man they called ‘’cowboy’’ and and taken to live with him in Alabama.

The long way down had many different messages, three of them were the time on the top corner of the pages, The middle drawing “ calling to him” the theme of revenge and ALIVE = A VEIL. Therefore the book Long Way Down is a book that uses symbols and signs to perpetuate gun violence and how life isn't easy for those who are stuck in the hood.
In the book Biggie, by Derek Sullivan, it takes place in a small town in Iowa called Finch, where almost everyone plays sports. Biggie however, is an overweight kid who sits at a computer desk during all of his free time. Biggie eventually meets a girl named Annabelle, who he falls in love with right away. Biggie goes to gym class one day and throws a perfect game in wiffle ball and then is pushed by his brother and his mom to try out for the school baseball team. Throughout most of the book Biggie is in love with Annabelle, although at the end of the book, Biggie ends up meeting a different girl named Courtney that he ends up falling in love with.
“Out Symbols” In the novel, The Outsiders by S.E.Hinton, a boy named Ponyboy lives through hard times as a Greaser. Ponyboy learns a lot about life through the symbolism that is throughout this story. The main points that are used for symbolism is Hair, ‘Gold’, and Sunrises.
Farah needed to escape from Afghanistan for a better life in “The Other Side of the Sky” . John wanted to train his unbridled dog in “Marley and Me “. And Angus,from “Wandering Angus”, wanted to find the "love of his life", the glimmering girl. However, these three were all determined to pursue their goal in order to improve their lives. Farah Ahmedi was in the middle of afghanistan, stranded in the desert.
The story has many symbols that need close attention from the readers in order to understand what the words actually mean. For instance, the woman says “I am in his power-he could take my coat so easily, my briefcase, my life” meaning that she is afraid of the man because he is black. If he were white like her, she wouldn’t thought he was dangerous or a mugger. Therefore, she is only judging him based on his looks because she doesn’t even know him personally. In addition she mentions how the white society act superior and take advantage of the minority, “ I am living off his life, eating steak he does not eat, as if I am taking the food from his mouth.”

You end up having no connection to your family so you have trouble communicating and having feelings for them which results in even though the machines don’t have any feelings or connections having to machines more that other people this shows how when people use technology too much or machines. People become to rely on them too much which dehumanises them and Bradbury shows that by symbolism, imagery and dialogue. Ray Bradbury uses symbolism to show how machines dehumanise people. One example is what the lions actually mean, the lions represent

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a short story told through diary entries of a woman who suffers from postpartum depression. The narrator, whose name is never mentioned, becomes obsessed with the ugly yellow wallpaper in the summer home her husband rented for them. While at the home the Narrator studies the wallpaper and starts to believe there is a woman in the wallpaper. Her obsession with the wallpaper slowly makes her mental state deteriorate. Throughout The Yellow Wallpaper Charlotte Perkins Gilman uses many literary devices such as symbolism, personification and imagery to help convey her message and get it across to the reader.

The story “Through the Tunnel” is about an 11 year old boy named Jerry who faces the challenge of going through an underwater tunnel to prove to a group of boys on the beach that he is mature. The author uses imagery and symbolism to portray the difficulty of overcoming challenges. In the story, imagery is used to show how ominous the tunnel that Jerry must traverse is. This is found on the second paragraph of page 364 where the author Doris Lessing writes “The roof was sharp and pained his back,” in this sentence, the words sharp and pained help the reader picture a dangerous place.
