A symbol is something used to represent ideas or concepts. One of the symbols in Winterdance is the dogs. The dogs in the book symbolize Gary’s love for running in the snow and exploring nature. In the book he even states how he feels like a family member of the dogs.
The usual symbolism in this short story usually shows hate through his relationship with the jacket. In the story he throws the jacket into an alley near his house just to pick it back up minutes later. This symbolism show that the jacket causes him so much pain but he's stuck with it because his mom wont buy him a new one. Another symbol that supports he hates
What is a symbol? In literature a symbol is an object, person, place or an idea that has a real meaning in itself and also a deeper and profound meaning . Many examples of symbols can be found in the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story of the book takes place in the roaring 1920’s and within the story Fitzgerald uses a lot of symbols as objects and physical location. The physical locations such as valley of ashes, Gatsby’s mansion , Nick’s house , the green light located in the Buchanan residents’ dock are not only places or locations that the author mentions, they symbolize emotions, feelings and other significant information.
James Hurst creates The Scarlet Ibis with an abundance of many literary devices, but a main device is symbolism. Nature and the Color red are the main symbols that Hurst uses throughout his short story. Hurst provides many symbols in his story and they all have a significant meaning, mostly relating to death. Throughout the story, the author makes multiple references to the color red, not only symbolizing death, but also provides hints of Doodle’s Death. The first encounter with this dreadful color can be traced to the second paragraph when Hurst describes Doodle after being born as a “tiny body which was red”(pg 1).

Surprisingly, a Union Stockyard could also be a symbol; The fictional Packingtown reveals many attributes about the real life Packingtown in the course of The Jungle. In The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, Sinclair uses Packingtown to symbolize the corrupt government, the working class, and the condition of the United States.

In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” James Hurst uses red to symbolize warning, death, and guilt to show the change the older brother goes through, as he takes care of Doodle. The first instance when red is used, is to express warning and the older brother’s attitude, is at Doodle’s birth.

To finish, the last symbol I will be focusing on Is nature. Nature is a symbol that encompasses the characters in this book but also is a character in the book. Nature first makes its appearance on page 107, “…the ugliest weeds of the garden were their children, whom Pearl smote down, and uprooted most unmercifully.” (Scarlet Letter) In this line Hawthorne writes to introduce the symbol of nature, you see nature being compared to as humans.
Hawthorne uses symbolism throughout the Scarlet letter to display the sin and indecency people see Hester as. The detail represents ,the deep beauty Hester has inside although most people do not see her as a beutiful women. The deep red is a representation of adultery which shows her being an oncast from society. The symbol of the letter “A” is repetitive throughout the novel and grows with Hester and overcomes this with time as people start to see her as a person again and not just a adulterer. Hester acknowledges her sin in her puritan faith but swears to secrecy on the father of Pearl.
The symbol I chose to represent this book is a Maze. A maze symbolizes both chaos and confusion, as well as order. In The Maze Runner, the gladiators are trapped inside the center what seams to be a huge labyrinth. Not only that, but every night the maze changes and walls move, making the search for an exit even more challenging. However, like all mazes, it only appears confusing and random.
