People protest to bring attention to social, political, and economic issues that they believe are worth fighting for and that require immediate action or reform. Whether it is for civil rights, environmental, or economic equality, protests serve as a means for individuals to express their dissatisfaction with the status quo and push for change. Additionally, in “Deaf Republic” by Ilya Kaminsky, the powerful imagery and symbolism of silence and deafness serve as a moving reminder of the importance of listening and understanding the context of different protests. The silence of the townspeople in Vasenka is in response to the government’s brutality and reflects a form of protest in itself, focusing on the power of nonverbal communication and collective resistance to one another. As I continue to explore the themes of protest and social change through the lens of “Deaf Republic,” I am eager to dig deeper into a bunch of silent protests whether it be through social media like the black profile picture for black lives matter or sit-ins which started in the 1960’s. How individuals can challenge different oppressive systems through actions and solidarity rather than just words intrigues me.
