In the book “Mexican Whiteboy¨- by Matt de la Peña some of the biggest symbols that stood out to me were stickball, mental health and a hawk because there was a common occurring symbol that continuously popped up in the book. I chose these symbols because they are all connected with Danny and effect him a different way The first symbol that I would be explaining is stickball because In the book the main character Danny plays and talks about stickball a lot. Danny enjoys playing stickball so much that he hopes to be in a team but to him stickball is not only a sport it's his passion even when danny went to a new place the only way he felt like he was fitting in was when he was playing stickball and that's the reason why I chose stickball as a symbol is because even when he was sad and depressed he was still thinking about stickball and how he didn’t enter the team he wanted to, on page 41 and 42 it says “This had been Danny’s spot since Coach Sullivan pulled him aside after the last day of tryouts-in front of everybody-patted him on the back and tried to let him down easy.
The book Night is written by Elie Wiesel. For my history project I had to find a recurring word, or symbol from the novel Night. The word death is used frequently throughout the book. In the book Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton multiple objects are used to represent big moments in the book and is heavily used. There are many objects that clearly relate to people and relationships between people. The first emblem that represents love between Mattie and Ethan is Mattie's red scarf and ribbon in her hair. The first symbol is the pickle dish representing Ethans and Zeena’s relationship. The final commodity is the cat which represents Zeena.
In the novel The House Of The Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, an important symbol is music. For Matt music represents individuality and comfort. The first support of this idea is in chapter nine when Matt tells us (the readers) what music does for him. "The ability to create music filled him with a joy too large to contain.

Through her use of a changing narrative perspective, Margaret Laurence creates a contrast in character development. Laurence shows the reader the male protagonist of the story, Chris, through the eyes of a child first, then of an adolescent, and finally through an adult’s eyes. At the beginning of “Horses of the Night,” the narrator, Vanessa notices that Chris looks completely oblivious towards Vanessa’s Grandfather’s belligerence, as he is displaying “no sign of feeling anything.” This is the first sign Laurence provides about Chris escaping in order to cope with reality. Next, when Vanessa visits Shallow Creek she comes to a realization that most of the stories Chris has shared with her about the farm, only exists “in some other dimension.”
Edger Allen Poe is an incredible author of horror. His story, The Masque of the Red Death, was an amazing chiller about a party that was ended by a disease. Throughout the kingdom a disease is spreading from citizen to citizen, killing each one who possesses it so the king invites those closes to him to a party where no one can leave and will be safe from the disease but yet in hindsight they were locking themselves in with the disease. Throughout the course of this hair-raising story, several symbols are represented to array Poe’s theme of death. Symbols such as the seven colored rooms, the clock, and lastly the Red Death are all symbols that are displayed to help get Poe’s notion across.

How come people of higher class have supremacy? People in the lower classes have always followed the leadership of the higher class. Nancy Farmer’s novel, The House of the Scorpion, is exemplary of this imbalance of power in society. Matt is a clone of the drug lord, El Patrón, who rules a country called Opium. Matt’s purpose as a clone is to keep El Patrón alive by providing him with healthy body parts.
We all have things from our childhood we remember. Maybe it’s a teddy bear from mom, or when dad brought home a computer, or a treehouse built with a sibling. We recollect these objects because they have a significant role in our lives, something about them changed us. Jeannette comes across many things during her childhood travels, they cause an immense number of problems but in the end they change her and her family for the better. Jeannette Walls’ story The Glass Castle, is filled with symbols that gradually release her and her siblings from the grasp of their negligent parents and the harrowing abyss that is their life.
Imagine if you thought someone loved in a way unique only to you, was only loving what you could do for them, and loved having that unbalanced control over your life. In the book, House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer, a young character Matt suffers with peers that wish he didn’t exist; because he stands for a more sinister reason. He lives only because of a person who seemingly loves him, El Patron, a drug lord in control of everyone and everything in the country of Opium. This unbalanced domination is extremely dangerous because as you may observe, having control is one of the things we ultimately fight for and with every day. As Matt examines El Patron further, he uncovers much, and with the discovered knowledge he is able to take away all of El Patron’s power.
Power can be displayed in various different ways, whether it be physical force, manipulation, coercion or persuasion, it has an inevitable effect on the environment facing it. The nature of power influences people who have too much authority to become overly conceited, resulting in failure driven by manipulation and neglect. This phenomenon is vividly portrayed in Hamlet by William Shakespeare and The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. In both narratives, characters demonstrate an excessive abuse of power, ultimately leading to failure for themselves and those around them. The power they are given is a valid proof of Abraham Lincoln’s quote, “Nearly all men can withstand adversity; but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”
Have you ever made a choice that would make you popular, but it was a bad choice. Maybe you made a decision that made you lose popularity, but was the right choice. Lyndon B. Johnson did both of these as a Texas senator and the president of the United States of America. Johnson had two sides a political side, and a principle side. Lyndon B. Johnson wanted votes, he needed votes if he wanted to become president.
For children, they tend to be pressured into the beliefs their society roots for. John Wyndham’s The Chrysalids shows how youths are effected from becoming so involved in their society’s beliefs. Through David’s eyes, it is revealed that with enough pressure, a public’s view can break a child’s family apart, form distrusts with one another, and even bring them to a bitter end in
People have many different reactions when given power. The reaction is usually either one where they use power for a greater good and to guide others in a better situation, or they can misuse the power given and take advantage of the circumstances or others to make themselves feel even more dominant and in command. In the play, Antigone by Sophocles one of the main characters , King Creon, abuses his power to take superiority of others and in an attempt to gain control. The misuse of power is more frequent than the use of power for the favorable, even in many current events.
