The disorder I am choosing to discuss is autism. There are several symptoms of autism. Symptoms of autism can range from being mild to severe. The first symptom is impaired social interaction. This means they avoid eye contact, have issues communicating, issue interpreting others, and do not use or understand facial expressions. In some cases they may not respond to their own name. Another symptom that is easy to spot is that they often have repetitive movements. These can include but are not limited to rocking, self-abusive behavior, or flapping of hand. However there is no scientific proof that these are related to autism. Autism is not always inherited, but it can be inherited if the parents have a chromosome abnormality or a single-gene disorder. If a sibling has it then other siblings will be more likely to have autism as well (National Human Genome Research Institute , 2012). In the world’s population there are said to be tens of millions people that have been diagnosed with a type of autism. Over two million of these people live in the United State. One out of forty-two boys will be diagnosed, and one out of one hundred eighty-nine girls will are diagnosed with autism. Autism cases can be found around the world, but is most commonly found in the United States, Asia, South America, Europe and South Korea. However, South Korea has a higher prevalence rate at 2% whereas the other four areas have a 1.6% prevalence rate (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). As of now, there are no cures for autism. However it can be helped with medical and behavioral therapies. These therapies help with language and social interactions. Medications can also help aggressive behaviors, sleeping patterns, inattention, and repetitive
