This paper focuses on autism. The article I chose is the Characteristics of Infantile Autism. Autism is a growing disorder in the United States, 20 children out of 10,000 (Pilipek et al., 2000) have an autism disorder. Children go to the doctor a lot the first three years of development, to get vaccinations and making sure they are developing at the appropriate level. Autism is diagnosed between the ages of two to six years of age, this is the most common age range for the diagnoses. The earlier they can catch the diagnoses the better it is for the outcome of the child. Being the parent of a child with this disability can be hard because the child doesn’t stay focused or a child who avoids eye contact, and does not communicate. As Goddard, Lehr, and Lapadat (2000) stated, "[Parents] described a system that compartmentalized, that regularized, and that fostered fear, confusion, and frustration. Within this overriding system, problems of coping with disability emerged" (p. 283). These home videos are to try to figure out the autism and how to catch it at an early age so they can give the children the proper treatment they need and deserve. Sign language might be a great thing to teach the children that have autism and are unable to communicate using verbal language would be great to have them be able to communicate with their parents and friends. The research is a great thing to have the parents give reports and using home videos, the best way to find out if your child has autism is to watch them, watch their actions and there moves, can they communicate effectively or how their social skills
