This article examines Seacrest High School that had major violent episodes between Asian-American and African-American students. While trying to decide how to deal with the violence and school safety, the other components of the school went by the wayside. All of this was chronicled in the media and an ensuing court order forced the school district to take measures that secured the safety of the students that attended the school. Although not done on purpose, the subsequent result was a neglect of academics and the overall school culture. The focus on safety, created during a chaotic approach to school improvement, led to a loss of focus of content knowledge, critical thinking skills, social-emotional support for students, and moral reasoning.
The movement of New Jersey authority in order to protect students from bullying within the state represents a step forward the children’s civil rights. Bullying is identified not just a harmful action towards students, but also considered as a violation to the rights of the student to be in school. In Madera High School students on an average mentioned that the staff members in this school did not handle bullying and harassment to the expectations. On average 125 students chose from a scale 1-10 that the school handled bullying and harassment from a 3-5, ten being perfectly handled. A student who was a victim mentioned, “ It made me feel scared and it made me fear interacting with new people. I did not go to someone for help I went to my teacher for help but she did not really help”(Anonymous). Bullying is an undesirable, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves actual disparity of power. According to Megan Brooks bullying is a serious public health problems, with significant short-and long-term psychological consequences for the child who is bullied and the child who is the bully. This only tells us that bullying can lead to difficulty that a certain children may experience and will have either short or long term problem. “Bullying has long been tolerated as a rite of passage among children and adolescents, but it has lasting, negative consequences and cannot simply be ignored.” Committee chair Frederick Rivera, MD.
Bullying has been named an “emerging public health issue requiring intervention” (Ansary, Elias, Greene, & Green, 2015, p. 27). As a major problem in schools around the world, the issue of bullying must be addressed in order to keep students physically and emotionally safe. The act of bullying not only affects the well-being of the person being targeted, but it also affects the rest of the school community too. It can be difficult for teachers, principals, and superintendents to make an ethical decision about what to do when bullying occurs because there are misunderstandings about what bullying is, leading to the improper identification of situations.
Most kids who get suspended “joke around” talking about guns and shooting up the school, but the community doesn’t think this is safe because it’s causing more parents to worry about their child being at school when there could be a possible threat to shoot up a school. Most firemen and policemen are sending out special messages to parents to show their children because the kids who are joking around can and will be taken as a serious threat to the city or school. Most kids want attention, but whenever they do something wrong they get suspended and punished for what they’ve done. A study in 2011 revolved around Texan students that got suspended 11 times or more throughout middle school and high school. This caused the students’ to care less about school and made them fail the grade they were in.
Bullying in Schools What seems fun and harmless for some students, is painful and degrading to others. Bullying has been a critical issue around schools, but before it was not as dangerous and know as it is now. These do not means bullying was not happening, it means it was not taken into consideration by parents or teachers.
