Truth to Broken Homes
In the book “Buck” by MK Asante, many things contributed to his success but coming from not a typical family I understand the hard ships that he had to go through as a young child. Even though I experienced being in a broken home where I felt like the root of all evil had sprung into my life, I decided to do a little more homework about how family structure works in a home with two parents and what are the effects of broken families among children. In this essay the following topics will be analyzed family structure, abusive vs. healthy relationships, divorce and co-parenting. In the article Family Theory- meaning of family, it speaks of four types of family they ranged from neighborhood families all the ways to extended families. The article states” Families may be structured by such characteristics as gender, age, and generation, as well as their connections to the outside world. These structures also are useful for distinguishing families from other kinds of social groups and organizations.” After Malo’s father left he had no family to turn to, his mother was not in the right mental state to take care of him and his brother was incarcerated, so the streets became his new found family. Parents want to try and shelter children form this process but they see more than anyone else. After a while co-parenting takes effect and the process has started. Children most of the time are placed with the mother for various reasons but the courts give visitation rights to the father. This concept always had me stomped, if a father wants to be a father who would stop them. why does a court have to order someone to see their child? It makes life a lot harder for everyone in the situation. When it comes to divorce and co-parenting it is a topic I sadly know all too well. Even though Malo didn’t go through the process of divorce he had to endure the process of only living with one parent. When co-parenting goes south or is not even an option it can make a child feel like they are the cause of an unhappy home. Some children of broken homes where asked about the effects on them and some answers where They acted out at school but took on more responsibility at home, felt the financial strain of living in a single parent household, and they played the blame game.
