Talent development model is a framework for gifted learners that can best be described as an idealistic, fluid holistic approach to the gifted learner in its beliefs and techniques. The talent development model looks at the gifted learner as a whole person with different needs throughout periods of their life then tries to support those needs as appropriate for the stage of development (Olszewski-Kubilius P., Subotnik R., Worrell F., and Thomson D., 2018) The talent development model defines “giftedness as doing” and it believes that ability starts out with potential but eventually evolves into achievement (Olszewski-Kubilius P., Subotnik R., Worrell F., and Thomson D., 2018, p. 280) As an educator at a gifted school that often seems to …show more content…

I have often thought the two types of students although very different in abilities both had very similar personalized needs. According to Worrell et al. (2012), Makel and Putallaz (2012) suggested that “the chief goal of gifted education and regular education should be the same: “to ensure that all students receive the education appropriate for them at any given time by maximizing the match between individual students’ educational experiences with their individual needs.” I thought it was interesting that the Worrel et al. (2012) addressed the fact that this was the goal of special education services. So one of the suggestions made to the talent development model was to add the component that every gifted education student is given an IEP to meet their educational needs (Worrel et al (2012). I can see the benefit for the gifted education student in a regular school with diverse populations. However, I am not sure how this would go about being implemented by a teacher at a regular school. I could not have imagined the year, that I had over half my class with IEP’s one more IEP being added to this list for me to try to meet. I remember the counselor that year bringing another accommodation for a new student and I got out a huge folder filled with IEP’s and I said add it to the pile. Her eyes just got wide but trying to meet all the IEP’s with no help was my reality. If IEP’s for gifted students become the new normal there would have to be better training for the classroom teachers and real support given to the classroom teachers to ensure the gifted students’ IEPs were being
