In ancient Rome, there existed great politicians, philosophers, and thinkers who changed the history of humanity. Marcus Tullius Cicero and Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus were two men who faced problems of the old society and created a solution for the people of Rome. In the treatise "On the Laws", Cicero shows a fictional conversation between himself, his brother Quinto, and his great friend Attic. The theme of the debate is the spirit of the Roman laws, the way in which they are approved by the assemblies, and the legitimacy of the various institutions.
Hercules Have you ever thought to yourself, what makes a hero a real hero? Hercules is a Disney movie about a hero, who has to go through a self-discovering journey to reunite with his family. Hercules goes through all the phases of a hero’s journey. The first phase of a hero’s journey is the departure phase. In the hero’s journey, as outlined by Joseph Campbell, a hero will question the world he or she lives in because he or she is different.
Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliff retells Homer’s tale, the Iliad, in a palatable fashion without editing too much of a character’s personality. In Sutcliff’s version, Achilles was not the hero that he is so often portrayed as; Achilles was a narcissist with power, pride, and strength. Friends as well as foes died, paying the price for Achilles’s obstinate behavior. Despite his great skill in physical combat, Achilles did not display the character traits that define a hero; Achilles showed the flaws that made him human.
In Herodotus’ Histories, Tigranes teasingly says, “Zounds, Mardonios, what manner of men are these that you have brought us to fight withal? ‘Tis not for money they contend but for glory of achievement!’. Tigranes makes this offhand comment, but it implies a difference between Spartan and Persian culture. Xerxes understands the implications of the comment itself and reacts badly to it. During battle, Xerxes finds out that the Spartans’ difference in values makes the Spartans better warriors.

Marcus Porcius Cato who was also known as Cato the Elder, was a military tribune in the Second Punic War. He is called "The Elder" to not be confused with his great grandson, Cato the Younger. Cato was born as a Plebian, but had a drive to climb up to the top of Rome's highest offices (McKay, John P.) His main goal was to restore old virtues of Rome that had been lost and forgotten. Cato grew up to be a brilliant leader because of his war skills, humbleness, and political skills.

Introduction In this paper, I will involve in exploring one trait of a hero in a nuanced and complex way. I will build this complexity by discussing two heroes who posses this trait, and one who does not. To illustrate, an epic hero is a character in the epic story or poem who is brave and noble. I will involve in exploring three heroes (Beowulf, Odysseus and Merry).
Brutus and Cassius are two prominent conspirators in the play Julius Caesar; one of these two fits Aristotle's depiction of a tragic hero. The difference between a normal hero and a tragic hero is that the latter will have a tragic flaw that keeps them from succeeding. These characters are often sympathetic and will cleave to the reader's pity. Firstly, we shall discuss Cassius. He was a man of questionable character.
The qualities that make an epic hero are strength, courage a strong mentality, and the aspiration to achieve heroic acts. Many heroes are considered role models as they make brave decisions attempting to do something extraordinary. Heroes often fight against the causes of evil as they try to make the environment a better place. Hercules (son of Zeus) is one of the many known Gods to Greek mythology. When this message came, the executioner put her to death with a sword. After her death, St. Eugenia appeared to her mother to tell her the day of her own death. She is known for healing the sick and helping the
Critic Northrop Frye claims that tragic heroes “seem the inevitable conductors of the power about them… Conductors may of course be instruments as well as victims of the divisive lightning.” A perfect example of this assertion would be King Oedipus in the classical tragic play “Oedipus Rex,” written by Sophocles, where Oedipus, himself, becomes the victim of his doomed fate. As someone who was born and raised of royal blood, he becomes too proud and ignorant, believing that he was too powerful for his fate. Using the metaphor “great trees [are] more likely to be struck by lightning than a clump of grass,” Frye compares the heroic but unfortunate Oedipus to the great trees as they both are apt to experience victimization of tragic situations
Hercules and Theseus, two great heroes from mythology, seem to be similar in many ways. In a similar way, they both stood by their friends no matter the cost.
A hero is one who takes risks and earns respect from others around him. In Greek mythology, heroes came and gone; they fought with bravery and were respected. In the Trojan War, Menelaus was one of the most significant Greek heroes. Menelaus clearly exemplifies the qualities of the courage and respect in a hero. As the King of Sparta and husband of Helen of Troy, he played an important role in the duel with Paris, the Prince of Troy, to win back his wife from her abduction to Troy.
