Talk Therapy Personal Statement

I have taken a strong interest in psychology ever since I took AP Psychology in high school. That interest has carried over to my college courses and I have loved learning about the different techniques of talk therapy and learning the history of how psychology research has evolved into what it looks like today. I spent two semesters involved in the Story Comprehension Lab with Dr. Elizabeth Lorch and Dr. Angela Hayden as one of their PSY 395 students and I was also a volunteer client for Natalie Gurnett over the course of 8 weeks, as a part of an EDP 652 study. While two completely different studies and experiences, I believe that combined, these two volunteer opportunities have given me invaluable knowledge and will help immensely when it comes to professionalism and initiative, along with the willingness and ability to show emotion and a commitment to step outside my comfort zone. …show more content…

Specifically, expanding my knowledge base as an acting patient first and helping the current graduate students learn, will add invaluable experience to my resume and help me to stand out as an applicant to clinical Ph.D. programs. I hope to not only get the credit experience out of it, but I also hope to carry these techniques that I’ll learn in this internship with me into my graduate school program. By acting the part of the patient, I’ll also learn about what it’s like to be on the other side of the conversation and see how it feels to have certain talk therapy techniques played out. This allows me to have a broader understanding of how they work, and will not only make me a more open-minded therapist in the future, but make me a more empathetic one and help me focus on the patient-centered therapy I intend to
