The purpose for secondary math education is to guide and support adolescents with high quality math that will prepare them for their future endeavors. School is mandatory for all children to attend, so educators must take advantage of the opportunity to be Jesus in every classroom. Although there are limitations to what the teacher can and cannot say, we must be creative and take advantage of the opportunity that is in front of us. “Christian teachers in public schools are “modern-day Daniels,” working in schools that are hostile to their faith” (Brown). So how can I, as a future secondary math educator in the public school system, use my career as a ministry to further the Kingdom of God? Words hold the power to build somebody up or tear somebody down. Words can be engraved in a person’s brain after spoken because there is no way to take words back. Educators have a powerful influence on their students and I want to model for them how to interact with others. My first goal is to encourage my students to meet their potential both academically and behaviorally. I strive to be a teacher that “has control over her classroom, laying out clear rules and expectations for students to follow. When students misbehave, discipline is consistent and fair” (Zeiger). Discipline shows care and concern. Using consequences are necessary, but I am going to use consequences that alter the behavior. Applying consequences correctly is important in keeping control in your classroom, while furthering the connection with your students and pushing them to meet their potential. Another goal is to model speaking life in an academic and personal setting. It is surprising to realize how many people are watching educators: faculty members, parents, and students. It is important to not only encourage and uplift others, but also conduct my actions in a way that will reflect the light of Christ. By remaining positive through difficult times, others will wonder how I still have joy. That will give me an opportunity to say that my joy comes from the Lord. By remaining hopeful in a dark situation, others will wonder why I am hopeful even when everything is against me. That will give me an opportunity to say that my hope is in the Lord. By trusting the Lord through a storm, others will wonder why I have peace. That will give me an opportunity to say that my trust is in the Lord. My testimony in the classroom will be the way I treat others and the way I speak to others. I want to represent Him the best I
