World War 1 claimed the lives of over 8 million people around the world. World war 1 was mainly trench warfare. Since it was a trench warfare war, new technology had to be made to move the war along. Some of the technology's was the advancement in weaponry like, Machine guns, war planes, and even aircraft carriers. The first advancement in weaponry I'm going to talk about is machine guns. Machine guns were one of the scariest things in the war. They were used to take down hordes of people charging the other trench in no man's land. No mans land was the area of land in between the two sides trenches. The machine gun was first invented in the 1800s during the civil war, but they were not fully automatic yet. In the early versions you had to use a handle to fire the bullets, in world war 1 it was just a trigger. Another reason the machine gun was so good is when they invented the light machine gun. Before the war the main objective of air planes were to stay in the air as long as possible but this changed once the war started. When the war first started airplanes were used to scout out the terrain ahead. The Germans had over 200 aircraft which helped them defeat the Russians in the battle of Tannenberg. As the war went on planes got more agile and were able to be used as weapons. This is when the term dogfight was introduced, a dogfight is when two planes are fighting in the sky trying to shoot each other down. Some of the deadliest pilots were called aces, the most famous was Manfred von Richthofen (Red Baron). After the world war planes were used to carry passengers and mail. By the year 2013 more than 2 billion people traveled by aircraft. World War 1 was just the start for aircraft, they kept developing, making longer flights and more agile
