Gabriela Paredes Mr. Closs World History A March 24 2023 Technological Advancements of WW1 World War 1 was a time of extreme industrial improvement, as the war accelerated most technology to the forefront of focus and refinement. World War 1 started as a result of the assassination of Austrian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand. After the Archduke’s assassination, a multitude of countries sprung at the chance to fight each other, resulting in what is now known as the first World War. Throughout WW1, many technological advancements were made, the most impactful being the advancements of artillery, aviation, and communication technology. Artillery played an impactful role in the warfare of WW1 and was the primary means of fighting during this time. The creation of the telegraph and telephone allowed armies to communicate with each other over longer distances. This technology allowed armies to coordinate attacks more effectively and respond to commands quickly. The telephone was the “preferred means of communication in World War One. Its immediacy allowed commanders to give orders directly to those on the front line. The telegraph, meanwhile, was incredibly effective at sending a message over distance, but each one had first to be written out, transmitted and then transcribed by the receiving operator” (royalmontrealregiment.com).
