Technology has shaped society since the beginning of humankind, however, people often neglect the dangers that an excessive use of it may bring. There are various negative effects that technology has on society and has demonstrated to not only harm an individual but damage a whole society. The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, narrates the life of Montag a fireman that lives in a dystopian city, where books are illegal and people over rely on technology. Montag begins to question everything that he has ever known when Clarisse, his young neighbor, tells him that all the answers that he is looking for can be found through books and not through mindless talk on t.v. Technology has the power to influence negatively the society, and with it, comes dangers such as an addictive lifestyle and a loss of real relationships.
One way technology negatively impacts society is by isolating people from real problems and by enabling them to build true relationships with others. In Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451, technology has turn the people into ignorant individuals who are completely oblivious about social issues. This causes Montag, the main character of the novel, to reflect, "We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in awhile. How long is it since you were really bothered? In Fahrenheit 451, families are even replaced by fictional characters, it can be seen when Mildred openly says, “My ‘family’ is people. They tell me things; I laugh, they laugh; And the colors!” (Bradbury 69). As a result of an obsession with entertaining themselves, it has gotten to the point that technology has completely replace and changed the concept of a family and love. Technology has the power to capture an individual's attention and transform the way he/her thinks, which is not always a good aspects. Video games, television, social media among others, have a significant impact on people's mind, especially young minds, therefore, nowadays “Many children are “hooked” on electronics, and in fact gaming releases so much dopamine—the “feel-good” chemical—that on a brain scan it looks the same as cocaine use” (Duckley). Technology is dangerous, for instance, it has the ability to enslave humans in a bogus world and drive them to distance themselves from family and friends. In like manner, technology's effect on people’s minds builds a society that can be easily manipulated. The over dependence and obsessive use of technology creates a vulnerable society that is every day more exposed to unfixable
