In the evolving world of technological advances, there are numerous opportunities for improving public health in various populations via leveraging on health technology platforms. This commentary explores the value of public participation in determining health promotional technology strategies in Indigenous communities. Community engagement also promotes key facets in planning, developing and implementing health technology strategies including, “Contextual inquiry” which is the process of obtaining information from the intended users of an intervention (Madjedi & Daya, 2016) and “Cultural tailoring” wherein the health information is grounded in the population’s core health epistemology (Rushing et al., 2016). Researchers should consider focused engagement with groups that have poor uptake, such as older adults, persons with disabilities and persons living in remote locations to improve uptake, access and coverage. A good starting point for researchers would be to access information and data from best practices and challenges in other Indigenous communities.
