SEX, LIES & SCANDLE – Were these allegations really teenage aspirations in the 2000’s? The 2000’s were a decade like no other, especially for teenagers. But behind all of that pop music, obsession with appearance and Nokias, teens were becoming increasingly categorized as bad news. All the media ever seemed to want to do was belittle and condemn our pimple faced youth. Television shows, music, movies, comics, advertisements and more seemed to be casting our teens in a negative light. Don’t believe me? The 2000’s were a decade like no other, especially for teenagers. But behind all of that pop music, obsession with appearance and Nokias, teens were becoming increasingly categorized as bad news. All the media ever seemed to want to do was belittle and condemn our pimple faced youth. Television shows, music, movies, comics, advertisements and more seemed to be casting our teens in a negative light. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a closer look at some real life examples of where teens got the reputation that they deserved. On September 17th, 2007, the hit adolescent show ‘gossip girl’ aired for the first time, offering a whole new perspective on our teenagers like no one had ever seen before – and personally, I saw it as surprisingly accurate! After its first two seasons, it had already acquired the position of most watched TV show for ages 12 -17, which would make quite a lot of sense since according to psychologist Jim Meyers, “your personality determines what you consume, especially which TV shows you watch.” As this show promotes ideologies such as ‘appearances are everything’, ‘overthrowing authority’, ‘physical fights’ and ‘adolescent sex’, there is no wonder it was such a hit, as it resonates with the real lie experiences and personalities of teens in this time
