ABSTRACT
Telemedicine technology is a rapidly growing industry in healthcare that is allows patients and primary care physicians to connect with consulting physicians using different social media outlets. These connections can be live over video streaming for immediate care or sent to physicians as a captured video/still images alongside patient data for diagnosis and follow-up treatment. We compiled statistical data on telemedicine technology on social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. Overall, there was a sense of enthusiasm at the possibilities of telemedicine technology being used by remote rural communities for better health care for patients. However, some research in the social media outlets also found that there are even amounts of pros and cons in discussions where telemedicine technology would be adopted by the primary care physician and rural patients. We explored the increased conversations between many urban and tertiary care facilities looking to provide better service the needs of their local rural communities. Many urban hospitals showed an increasing following due to the potential of the telemedicine technology being used as tool give more patients access to their facilities. Telemedicine technology is in infancy stages and therefore the research could not gather a large sampling of telemedicine technology social media websites to accurately discuss advancements or hinders this technology can bring to the medical field. Currently, telemedicine technology has only been adopted by a relatively few health care organizations. Furthermore, there have been random social media postings as well as blogs that reveal negative opinion and concerns, but those were limited and few. It is keenly important to address that these negative comments are only speculative and are created from social media telemedicine technology critics who are not necessarily using the technology.
