“Build the wall,” an anti-immigrant chant made popular by President-elect Donald Trump, was heard on the Texas A&M campus on Nov. 9, according to student Alejandra Luna. Texas A&M University is home to over 66,000 students. According to the Texas A&M University Accountability website, white students make up 58.05 percent (38,563) of the student population with the next biggest race/ethnicity being Hispanic students with 19.77 percent (13,135) of the population, followed by Asian students at 6.46 percent (4,293) and African American/Black students at 3.78 percent (2,513). “One of my really close friends is not a United States citizen and is here attending school. I feel worried for her that she has to attend school in such a hostile environment.” Texas A&M University needs to get better at being real and acknowledging that racism exists on campus said Alejandra Luna, a Hispanic political science major. “I didn't know that being a minority meant your life was gonna be complicated,” said Luna. I didn't know we were constantly gonna be looked at as the standard for every minority.” If Texas A&M would do something about the racism instead of just continuously sending emails saying they love all races, the school and the students attending it would be better in general, said Luna, regarding the email sent out by Young. Luna said she was not hesitant about attending Texas A&M because of race. “I knew there were Hispanics and other minorities on campus, so I never felt the need to be worried about race,” said Luna. “But I feel like the recent election has made a difference.
