Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) is a unique public school created and financed by the state of Texas. This school delivers specialized services with emphasis on the learning needs of the visually impaired. Students work mainly in one of the numerous curricular styles to include: academics, elementary concepts, basic skills, experience in transition (EXIT) , post secondary, and practical academics. TSBVI uses several approaches when it comes to curriculum development. These curriculums are tailored not only to the students disability needs but also their educational need. The students in this curriculum have the willingness for learning, but have yet to begin performing academically on a first grade level. This program contains thematic units, which involve students in age-appropriate learning activities that help in the development of academic readiness and also includes music, art, cooking, and social play.
The basic concepts curriculum is meant for those students ages 6-22 who have visual impairments in combination with other disabilities and learn best through consistent routines and functional activities. Often these students have a hard time with developing skills in new or different situations. In this approach social development, emotional development, and communication skills are substantial factors.
In the experience in transition or EXIT program, the focus is transitioning young adults from the academic to adult world. Made for student’s ages 18-22, the EXIT program focuses on the following areas of transition: personal management, household management, physical and mental health needs, transportation, employment and much more.
