Text messaging has proven to be an effective way to remind patients of their appointments. Text messaging has also been found to be an effective way of improving medication compliance. Medication compliance is of utmost importance for many chronic conditions.

Disadvantages: there is now convincing data that text messaging can influence health behavior and decisions. It does not encourage cancellation or rescheduling in patients who cannot attend or who cannot be longer wish to attend. Some patients changed their phone number during the study. Patients may not receive SMS due to incorrect data entry.
