Short stories are written to share a lesson, or show and experience for the reader to relate to their own lives. Most stories show a challenge that someone has to overcome, such as a physical threat, or a mental confrontation that they have to face. In the story “Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, one of the two main characters, Lemon Brown, faced both types of challenges while having taught a message to the protagonist Greg Ridley. LIkewise, in the story “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones caught a child named Roger who tried to steal her purse for a pair of shoes. When thrown into a problematic situation, even without a similar background in the slightest, Lemon Brown and Mrs. Jones address their problems similarly..
The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).
Aristotle, a famous philosopher, once said, “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet” (Brainyquote.com). The ‘bitter roots’ he is talking about are quarterlies. A quarterly is a test given to students at the end of each marking period to allow students to show what they have learned for that marking period. Each major subject including math, science, english, and history, are required to administer the tests. Understandably, not many people are familiar with this test because they are actually very uncommon.
She might think he will listen to her and not steal again. If this is true, then somebody from the community should have stepped up and tried to do the same earlier. In conclusion, the moral of this story is that in order for someone to learn what is respectable or at least right, someone else must teach them. If they have no family or parents that to do this, then consequently it is up to the community to help that person

Langston Hughes' philosophical idea was equality in the United States of America. The first way Langston Hughes shows his philosophical idea of equality is by showing he wants everyone to be treated fairly and have the government not allow people to be racist to the Afro-Americans, Indians, and other immigrants located in the United States of America. The second way Langston Hughes shows his philosophical idea of equality is by showing his desire and dedication towards of achieving equality and shows off his dedication of hard work to achieve his dream but can’t due to of the barriers he has to overcome
The theme of the poem, “Let America Be America Again” by Langston Hughes is about equality. There are multiple reasons and quotes hinting to why it's about Equality. For example, Hughes states in his poem, “There has never been equality for me, nor freedom in this “homeland of the free”” (15-16). From this quote we can see that he thinks everything isn’t equal. He put quotes around the homeland of the free to make it seem sarcastic.
There is an outgoing trend on social media where Central American Latinos make this joke where they state that they speak Central American Spanish, not Caribbean Spanish. The audio of an individual speaking extremely fast to the point that it is hard to understand. The reason behind this joke is a long debate about what is considered proper Spanish among the Latinx community. Many Latinos and Latinas argue that the most proper Spanish is Mexican Spanish because it has fewer dialects and they speak at a moderate speed, therefore is considered easier to communicate because everyone can understand it. The story is about a boy named Roger who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse, she takes him to her house and takes care of him. Roger could be described as lonely because he has nobody home at his home, he is very respectful of Mrs. Jones, and he tries to steal.
The poems, “Lineage”, by Margaret Walker, and “Helen Keller”, by Langston Hughes have many similarities and differences in the theme, imagery, and figurative language. The theme in Walker’s poem is about how grandmas are very tough, and you should respect your elders, while the theme in Hughes’ poem is about when times are hard, find your inner strength. A similarity between the two themes is that both idolize and admire strong women that have the power to find strength through dark times. For example, Walker’s poem states, “...full of sturdiness and singing. My grandmothers were strong”.
Often in life, people read literature that speaks to them on a spiritual level, to the point they can relate it to their personal life. This is definitely the case with me, throughout my short life I have read tons and tons of literature, good to bad, short to long, slow to fast. It seems as though poems, are the most abstract form of literature, given that, they are excellent pieces of work that have meanings that are meant to connect to the reader, on many different levels. Two very special works of literature, “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and “Dreams” by Langston Hughes seem to connect with me better than others, I feel that I can apply the meanings of these poems to my personal life on a spiritual, logical, and emotional level.
In Thank You Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones showed the golden Rule by bringing Rodger into her home. She showed much hospitality towards him, even though he tried to do something horrible to her. Mrs. Jones could have done something cruel to Roger, but instead she was kind to him. She taught him a valuable life lesson, although she was not mean about it. Following the golden rule in life is very important for everyone, you should always follow this rule, no matter what.
A central theme in the short story “Thank you Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes is a little kindness goes a long way. One act of kindness can change a person’s life forever. Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.
“This is Just To Say” by William Carlos Williams does not say much at all really; on the surface it seems like an apology note someone would leave on the fridge, and it leaves one wondering what the point of the poem is. The main event that had happened in the story is, a boy (Rodger) wanted to get blue suede shoes and he didn’t have enough money, so he tried to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones purse, and that was a bad choice. After that, she caught him with a strong, bold arm and took him to her house. While there, she talks with the boy and feeds him.

It presents the readers, the idea of goodness, the theme of trust, forgiveness, and kindness. Hughes is able to convert a language that is easier to understand by characterizing the context of story, advancing important themes, and using dialogue among the characters. Trust is one of themes that stood out while analyzing the short story. Though Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones has been victimized Roger worries that she won’t trust him, so he moves.
